Romania's Tech & AI Job Market in 2026
The End of Easy Hiring – and the Beginning of a New Era
For more than a decade, Romania has been one of Europe's strongest technology hubs.
International companies opened development centres in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași and Brașov, while thousands of software engineers built successful international careers.
Today, the market looks very different.
The question is no longer "How many developers can we hire?"
The question has become:
"What skills will still matter in an AI-driven market?"
➡️ What happened?
Between 2020 and 2022, the technology sector experienced an unprecedented hiring boom.
Remote work became the norm.
Funding was abundant.
Companies competed aggressively for talent.
Salaries increased rapidly.
Many organisations hired ahead of their actual business needs.
Then everything changed.
From 2023 onwards, inflation, rising interest rates, reduced venture capital funding and global restructuring forced companies to rethink their hiring strategies.
Large international technology companies announced significant layoffs while redirecting investments towards Artificial Intelligence.
The post-pandemic hiring boom was followed by a period of consolidation and much stricter recruitment decisions.
Romania was not isolated from these changes.
Although the local technology sector remains one of the strongest in Central and Eastern Europe, recruitment has become considerably more selective.
➡️ Why is it so difficult for graduates today?
This is probably the biggest change we have seen.
Five years ago, graduating from a Computer Science faculty almost guaranteed several interview invitations.
Today, many graduates send dozens, sometimes hundreds of applications before receiving an interview.
Why?
Because companies are hiring fewer juniors.
Entry-level positions have declined while competition has increased dramatically, with hundreds of applications for a single vacancy. This trend continued into 2026.
At the same time, Artificial Intelligence has started to automate many routine development tasks that traditionally represented the first learning opportunities for junior developers.
Companies now expect graduates to arrive with:
•GitHub projects
•internship experience
•AI tools experience
•cloud knowledge
•excellent English
•strong communication skills
A university degree is still important.
It is simply no longer enough by itself.
➡️ The Romanian market has not collapsed.
It has matured.
There is an important difference.
Demand still exists.
But demand has shifted.
Companies are increasingly looking for professionals able to solve complex business problems rather than simply write code.
The strongest demand today is concentrated around:
•Artificial Intelligence
•Machine Learning
•Cloud Engineering
•Cybersecurity
•Data Engineering
•DevOps
•Embedded Software
•Automotive Software
•Digital Transformation
Global studies also show that vacancies requiring AI skills have grown far faster than the overall labour market, and AI-related skills increasingly command salary premiums.
➡️ AI is changing recruitment—not replacing engineers
Artificial Intelligence is often presented as a threat.
We see it differently.
AI will replace certain repetitive tasks.
It will automate documentation.
It will speed up software development.
But companies will continue to need experienced professionals who can design solutions, understand business requirements, work with customers and make critical technical decisions.
The future belongs to engineers who know how to work with AI, not against it.
➡️ Our advice for young professionals
If you are starting your career in technology today:
✔ Learn AI tools.
✔ Build real projects.
✔ Create a strong GitHub portfolio.
✔ Improve your English.
✔ Develop communication skills.
✔ Choose a technical specialisation instead of remaining a generalist.
The market still offers outstanding opportunities.
The expectations, however, have become significantly higher.
