➡️ JOB DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION

The NHS Trust is looking for a Consultant General Surgeon with a interest in Upper GI benign Surgery to join the Department of General Surgery.

Employing approximately 4000 staff, the hospital provides the wide array of services one would associate with a general hospital.

There are 400 acute beds on the hospital site, including 46
beds on the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU). In recent
years Tameside General Hospital has also undergone significant development including a purpose built Day Case Theatre & Endoscopy Unit, a new Macmillan Unit, and a new Urgent Emergency Care facility.

THE GENERAL SURGERY DEPARTMENT

Specialty Doctors 11
Clinical fellows 7

A furnished office and access to appropriate secretarial support will also be provided.

➡️ MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The key areas for the post holder will include:
The clinical duties will be shared with the other consultants and will include all duties normally expected in a General Surgery department. Although the job is primarily to work within Emergency Surgery, there will be a General Surgery component to the job plan. Participation in the on call rota on a 1:8 basis, including weekends. The usual commitment for prospective cover is anticipated at this level

The provision of clinical leadership in the delivery of general surgical services and responsibility for the supervision, training and appraisal of junior staff. Collaborative working with nursing and other colleagues to organise effectively and manage the case-mix in general surgery on a day-to-day basis.

Active involvement in the planning, scheduling and delivery of elective and emergency surgery. Working co-operatively with colleagues and others within the Trust to achieve the Government's targets for service improvement and delivery in relation to outpatient, elective and emergency care.

In conjunction with other clinical teams and the wider health economy develop and implement integrated elective and emergency care pathways throughout the Trust. Participation in relevant audit and quality assurance processes, including reviews of manpower requirements.

Teaching of the junior doctors is an integral part of the clinical work. It is envisaged that all consultants will have an involvement in teaching and training junior colleagues, but overall responsibility will be with one consultant (The Educational Supervisor) on a rotating basis (if applicable).

ON CALL COMMITMENTS: The post holder will form 1
part of a 1 in 8 Category “A” Consultant On Call rota (which
carries a 5% uplift). When on call, the Consultant is supported by junior and middle grade team members and does not perform elective duties.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Essential:

Full GMC registration with a Licence to practice.
Entry on GMC Specialist Register via  CCT or CESR (CP) – within 6
months of interview  CESR

➡️ SALARY:
£109,725 - £145,478 per annum
